Ask the Trainer

QUESTION 1: Submitted by Abby

My dog is a horrible street scavenger and eats garbage and plant matter whenever he gets a chance. How can I train him to stop? HELP!

ANSWER: If your dog is a scavenger, it would help to get him into some nose work classes or give him some “find it” activities around the house to satisfy his instinctual need to “scavenge”.  As for training, I would recommend impulse control training consisting of solid loose leash walking and “leave it.”

QUESTION 2: Submitted by Bellinda

Where can I train my lab to be a therapy dog for kids in hospitals?

ANSWER: Most hospitals require at least a Canine Good Citizen Certification, which requires your dog to go through a series of behaviors successfully.  Check: http://www.akc.org/dog-owners/training/canine-good-citizen/about/ for more information.

Yappy Hour The Peninsula at Williams Island

Rocco’s Pack staff attended the first “Yappy Hour” on April 13 at The Peninsula, where staff met with residents and their pooches worked on obedience and agility skills. Dogs large and small enjoyed a warm evening on the lawn with Frisbees and treats while socializing with other pups. Thank you to The Peninsula for welcoming Rocco’s Pack to this fun event, we look forward to attending again in the future.

Rocco’s Pack and The Humane Society of Greater Miami Now A Team

Leby Gonzalez and Rocco’s Pack Staff are working with The Humane Society of Greater Miami to rehabilitate dogs that have proven hard to place in their forever home. At the Humane Society’s Soffer and Fine Adoption Center in North Miami Beach, Rocco’s Pack be- gan working together with HSGM staff and volunteers. Leby will be doing weekly evaluation and training sessions with shelter dogs that need additional help with socialization and rehabilita- tion, assisting HSGM staff in their goal to match each dog with the right home. Rocco’s Pack is thrilled to join HSGM’s efforts with the new Training Program, and we are excited to help rescued dogs on their journeys to forever families.
